Synopsis

Inspiration is an illusive muse, it cannot be wooed it must be chased, hunted.

All masterpieces were written for the sake of writing...

Ready to write yours...? A first draft perhaps...

THE IATI PLAYWRIGHTS WORKSHOP objective is to prepare and launch a fearless corps of Hispanic Playwrights primed and ready to secure our place at the so-called “American Theatrical-Table.” This workshop centers around the members fearlessly attacking the “work.” Playwrighting rules are placed on the shelf and “Discovery” is paramount. The workshop member will create new work from scratch using the “3 A DAY METHOD,” a work system, that ensures the completion of a first draft in 30 days.

This workshop will be divided in two stages, Playwriting I: Discovery and Playwriting II: To Final Draft. Although enrolling in both parts of the workshops is not obligatory, the instructor has designed the workshops to be taken consecutively in order to maximize growth as a playwright. To enroll only in Playwriting II, a script sample of 15 pages must be submitted to ensure the playwright is at the adequate level.

Playwriting I: DISCOVERY

Playwriting II: TO FINAL DRAFT

In the first ten weeks, the insistence in turning in a minimum amount of pages every week will be paramount. This material created in the first stage will make up the foundations that will develop into the intuitively written first draft.

The second set of ten weeks will begin by reestablishing the “Discovery” writing process and the writing schedule. Playwrighting II will explore the revision and expansion of the script completed previously. Here all creative energy will be devoted to rewriting scenes and/or writing new scenes and acts in order to craft a full-length play.

By the end of Playwriting I, all playwrights will have completed a play.

Each playwright’s completed final work will then be presented in the final showcase in concert readings

About the instructor: Oscar A. Colón

My Credo

I believe that writing is fun! One of the things that I strongly believe in and like to pass on to playwrights (new or old) is that there is no such thing as writer’s block. The condition is a self-created bogeyman to keep the playwright from writing. Believe it or not, a playwright is often his/her own worst enemy. We’ll work on ways of getting around the DAEMON OF WRITERS BLOCK and get back to having fun writing.
