The Junk Eater Wizard: An Ecological Adventure

Written by Pati Doménech

Directed by Rubén Darío Cruz II

Synopsis

Two kids come across a wizard who’s destroying the city with magic potions and bad habits. With the help of their grandma, they decide to confront him. Will they win? Join us and you will see.

With this production for children from kindergarten to 5th graders, IATI looks to promote a positive attitude among students to respect the environment.

"The Junk Eater Wizard” is the title of this play, in which intrigue and smoke surrounds the lives of two children in a polluted city. A suspicious pseudo science, with its excesses, lead to the development of a plot in which children, after being victims of its powerful drinks, feel they must unmask this uncontrolled man and save the city from an ecological disaster.

IATI Theater is concerned that the quality of life, sustainable development, resource management, ecology and all that revolves around the issue of environmental degradation is increasingly and more widely affecting more areas of society. For IATI does not want to remain indifferent to issues of deep draft, and includes to its repertoire a production that reflects on this matter.

Playwright's Lab

Bring your laptop and let’s get going on that first draft

Dates: December 4, 2010 - May 14, 2011 (Saturday 4–6pm)

Language: English, Spanish

Location: 59-61 East 4th St, 2nd Fl New York, NY 10003

Synopsis

Maybe you've had the idea brewing, but no one to help you put it on paper. The Playwrights Lab is a place where ideas flow, critique is encouraged and risks happen on a weekly basis. Students work with an established playwright in a creative atmosphere to overcome writer's block and set their demons loose.

The main focus of this workshop is to get our writers from an idea to a first draft in 30 days! Most playwriting workshops teach rules, do's and don't! At the beginning this can stifle or perhaps even destroy a writer.

Our workshop teaches "freedom" in writing! and "discipline" — the key to prolific playwriting. Our instructor's "3 a day" concept will keep the playwright writing even when the "muse" is nowhere in sight.

Ruth and the Great Gust of Wind

Written by Noelle Ghoussaini

Dates: March 1, 2011 ( 7:30–9pm)

Language: English

Location: 64 East 4th Street, New York, NY 10003

Synopsis

Ruth and the Great Gust of Wind tells the story of Ruth Reynolds, a pacifist from South Dakota, who was deeply involved in the struggle for Puerto Rico’s independence from the United States for over four decades. Although Ruth devoted much of her life to the Puerto Rican struggle, her story was very much an American one. Her work was rooted in a profound understanding of the founding principals of her nation and an irrepressible urge to see those fulfilled. The play traces her years in prison in Arecibo, Puerto Rico in the early 1950s and the journey that led her there. We learn of her intimate relationship with the infamous Pedro Albizu Campos, the leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party; her estrangement from her family and the many voices of the Puerto Rican independence movement that were silenced by deep rooted oppression on the part of the United States government.

About the Playwright

Noelle Ghoussaini is a playwright, director and arts educator. She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Performance Studies and French and her MA in Arts Politics from NYU. Over the past five years, she has worked for numerous non-profit arts organizations in Chicago and New York City, teaching theatre, dance, photography and playwriting. After completing her Masters in May, she traveled to Palestine where she taught dance at the Freedom Theatre in the Jenin Refugee Camp. Her third original play, Ruth and the Great Gust of Wind premiered at Les Manouches Theatre’s “Between the Seas” literary reading festival in October of 2010. In March of 2011, she will be directing a short excerpt of the play for the director’s weekend at Culture Project’s Women Center Stage. She has directed and assistant directed for numerous theatre companies throughout New York City and is currently directing Marjuan Canady’s one woman satirical show, Girls! Girls? Girls, which is on tour at colleges and cultural centers throughout the country.

Synopsis

The sun rises-and with it the whims of a totalitarian ruler. When Jeremias, a butler, enters the chamber of the world's leader, the routine of servitude and power begins as it has every morning for time immemorial. A parchment holds all the instructions to be followed by the loyal Jeremias, but as the omnipotent ruler creates laws to suit his every wish, his once perfectly established throne is threatened.

What will the night that he hates bring? What happens when the servant sees the moon swallow the sun? What happens when the master cannot control the night shadows' defeat over the day's light?

Immersed in poetry and the absurd, "El Mandatario Idiota" paints a bleak yet comical picture of power and those who serve it--an intellectual exploration of philosophies that have transcended all historical eras.

Synopsis

At the end of days, the last two survivors roam the world with one purpose: to survive. One is delicate and the other is robust. One says “kill!” and the other says “do not!” One believes in the consequence of actions and in having a pure conscience, the other values the dignity of life above all else—even if it means death.

But can conscience and beliefs be constant when starvation is the only reality? Can robust always stay robust and delicate always delicate? Or can hunger change our very sense of humanity and murder?

“No Lo Mates,” is a poetic and absurdist study on the desperation of survival and killing.

Language: Spanish

Location: ART/NY (520 8th Avenue, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10018)

Synopsis

The actor's craft is not to act, it is to become.

Are you willing to become? Then…

Leave the actor behind and embrace the character and its world.

Workshop Learning Objectives

• Application of the original method Actor’s Conscious Unconscious for the preparation or rehearsal of the actor¬.

• The ultimate objective of the work in the actors’ preparation is to establish four connections. These four connections must be evident in the scene presentation of the final showcase that will take place at the end of the second term. The connections are:
1. First connection: with the self.
2. Second connection: with the ensemble, through collective interrelation.
3. Third connection: mental and spiritual contact with our origins.
4. Fourth connection: with the audience on the day of the scene presentation.

The workshop will consist of the above basic stages in the process of the actors’ universe, all stemming from the methodology Actor’s Conscious Unconscious. It will then be divided in 2 terms. Although enrolling in both parts of the workshops is not obligatory, the instructor has designed the workshops to be taken consecutively in order to maximize growth as an actor. Also, to enroll only in Workshop Part II, an interview and audition might be requested to ensure the level of the applicant is appropriate.

Workshop Part I: THE ACTOR’S PREPARATION

Workshop Part II : THE ATMOSPHERE OF INTERPRETATION

A. Discovery of creativity

A. The actor and his circumstances
- The circumstantial “I”
- The actor’s “I”
- The character’s “I”

B. The inner professor (the actor’s unconscious)
- The vertical actor and the horizontal actor.
- Creation of the character: the mastering of the actor over the character.
- First atmosphere: mastering the theatrical image (verbal or physical).
- Second atmosphere: freedom of the actor before the image.
- Third atmosphere: entrance to the character’s universe.
- The actor’s dramaturgy: creation of the character.

Playwriting Workshop: The Bilingual Playwright

“Take fear out of the equation and you can accomplish wonders.”

Dates: January 14, 2012 - June 23, 2012 (Saturday 4–7pm)

Language: English, Spanish

Location: 59-61 East 4th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10003

Synopsis

Inspiration is an illusive muse, it cannot be wooed it must be chased, hunted.

All masterpieces were written for the sake of writing...

Ready to write yours...? A first draft perhaps...

THE IATI PLAYWRIGHTS WORKSHOP objective is to prepare and launch a fearless corps of Hispanic Playwrights primed and ready to secure our place at the so-called “American Theatrical-Table.” This workshop centers around the members fearlessly attacking the “work.” Playwrighting rules are placed on the shelf and “Discovery” is paramount. The workshop member will create new work from scratch using the “3 A DAY METHOD,” a work system, that ensures the completion of a first draft in 30 days.

This workshop will be divided in two stages, Playwriting I: Discovery and Playwriting II: To Final Draft. Although enrolling in both parts of the workshops is not obligatory, the instructor has designed the workshops to be taken consecutively in order to maximize growth as a playwright. To enroll only in Playwriting II, a script sample of 15 pages must be submitted to ensure the playwright is at the adequate level.

Playwriting I: DISCOVERY

Playwriting II: TO FINAL DRAFT

In the first ten weeks, the insistence in turning in a minimum amount of pages every week will be paramount. This material created in the first stage will make up the foundations that will develop into the intuitively written first draft.

The second set of ten weeks will begin by reestablishing the “Discovery” writing process and the writing schedule. Playwrighting II will explore the revision and expansion of the script completed previously. Here all creative energy will be devoted to rewriting scenes and/or writing new scenes and acts in order to craft a full-length play.

By the end of Playwriting I, all playwrights will have completed a play.

Each playwright’s completed final work will then be presented in the final showcase in concert readings

If your purpose is to direct art for stage...

Explore the creative power of directing and exploit its every iota.

Workshop Learning Objectives

1. To experiment—that is to say, investigate, and gain access into new spontaneous ideas. To explore and gain a more conscious relationship to non-traditional forms of making theater.

2. We will be continually trying to figure out what we want to express, generating this impulse out of a personal context, and then investigating/exploring the form that you feel you need to use to say what is important to you.

3. Our goal is to investigate and explore ways in which to genuinely investigate and give theatrical expression to our personal, interior lives, and then to continually strive to examine how, why, and the most effect manner to communicate our theatrical experiments to an audience.

4. To create a safe and rigorous environment, to learn to give concise, constructive feedback, to exchange ideas, and generate the strongest work we are capable of.

Directing - Part I

Directing - Part II

About the Artists:

We create concrete, visceral, inquisitive, and profoundly entertaining containers which reveal the frequent absurdity of, contradictions within, and fundamental mysteriousness of, human nature. We also seek to embody the tensions of living as hilariously, tragically, and stubbornly complex beings within a culture dominated by the rational mind. They wait for an answer from above. They are anguished. They yearn to know what is outside. They are without answers, but they do have one rule. Si les dijera un nombre, no dejaría nunca de estar presa de mi propia conciencia.

Language: Spanish

Location: Gershwin Hotel: 7 East 27th Street | New York, NY 10016

Synopsis

Mariana Pineda tells the story of a heroine of the city of Granada (Spain) that was condemned for embroidering a flag with the motto of the liberal plight, “equality, liberty and law” and thus defied the monarchical, totalitarian regime imposed by King Ferdinand VII. Mariana Pineda was first detained and imprisoned within a Granadian convent but was later sentenced to death by the king himself through the gruesome torture of the Spanish garrote vil. Se was only 26 years old. Before her execution, Mariana was offered absolute pardon and liberty if she provided the names of her liberal accomplices, but she refused by speaking the words: “Without hesitation I prefer a glorious death than to cover myself in shame by betraying a living person.” Her imprisonment and death have also been dramatized by other Granadian authors such as Federico Garcia Lorca and José Martin Recuerda.

Antonio César Morón has exposed the topic in a radically different point of view and chosen a setting away from Granada in order to give the play a more universal nature. However, his most innovative contribution to the story is his use of a dramatic technique that is utterly different from that utilized by other authors who have worked with this material before. The technique used in this piece has been named by Morón as “quantum playwriting,” which consists of exploring the possible translations of theories developed by quantum physics and applying them to dramatic texts.

Synopsis

Walter, Billy and John are three illegal and undocumented Ecuadorian immigrants. They share a dirty, roach infested basement in Corona, Queens, NYC. They live shut-in while the most severe winter in past decades rages on. Walter and John are brothers, the other is a close friend. The three of them attempt to eradicate the roaches in the basement, but they have no idea that the real roaches about to be eradicated by the circumstances are them.

Cortez depicts the plight of hundreds of Hispanic immigrants by dramatizing three of them. The script becomes a scathing depiction of the tragedy of the phenomenon of immigration, human smuggling, raids and xenophobia.

When the powers of death crop up at every turn, what else can one do…but whistle? Physical theater about a tramp-like figure in 1870’s Alsace-Lorraine.

About the Artists:

We create powerfully embodied, deftly inquisitive, and richly entertaining containers which point to both the profound depth, and fundamental mysteriousness, of human nature. We also seek to embody the tensions of living as hilariously, tragically and stubbornly complex beings within a culture dominated by the rational mind. We are, therefore, a theatre of secrets which cannot be described, paths which may only be pointed to, and those universally shared elements of human reality which nonetheless operate in unsearchable darkness.
